Bowhunt in City of Wausau

The City of Wausau has revised the Wausau Municipal Code to allow bow-hunting of whitetail deer within City limits under ordinance number 9.08.010(b). The ordinance is restrictive to protect public safety and the rights of property owners including those that may choose not to allow hunting on their property. The discharge of firearms other then bows used for hunting deer is not permitted within City limits.

 

The ordinance requires the following to bow hunt deer in the City of Wausau:

 

 A 200’ separation distance between the point where the hunting arrow is released and any public or commercial building, public road, park, or residence unless the hunter owns or resides at that residence. This requirement excludes most properties in the City.

 

That hunter must release the arrow from on an elevated stand which is at least 6’ above ground level.

 

No feeding or baiting of deer.

 

Compliance with all rules and regulations of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and City ordinances. (Bow-hunting of deer in the City follows the normal Wisconsin DNR Archery Deer Season dates.)

 

Any person wishing to hunt deer by bow and arrow within the City must register in person with the Wausau Police Department providing photo identification. The hunter must also display their WI DNR archery deer hunting license. Any written permission(s) from the property owner(s) or a signed statement declaring the hunter owns the property must be provided. The hunter will also indicate the address of the property to be hunted, as hunted property is tracked.

 

After the hunter registers, the registration is reviewed and a letter of approval or disapproval is mailed to the hunter within several days.   This letter should be maintained by the hunter as proof of registration to others.

 

Hunters can begin registering at the Wausau Police Department on or after August 23^rd between the hours of 8am-4:30pm.
