August Recreation Opportunities

Wausau and Marathon County Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department is offering August recreational opportunities to include swimming, tennis, tree climbing, Dog-Gone Pool Party, camping, target shooting, mountain biking and a free outdoor movie.
Kaiser, Memorial and Schulenburg Pools are open daily from 1 p.m. until 7:50 p.m. with some exception through August 13. Kaiser Pool will remain open through August 17. Due to a shortage of lifeguards, Schulenburg Pool will be closed on August 7 and 8, Memorial Pool will be closed on August 9 and 10 and Kaiser will be closed on August 11 and August 12. All pools are half-priced after 6 p.m. and free on Wednesday nights from 6 p.m. until 7:50 p.m.

Beginner and advanced morning or afternoon tennis camps are available for the week of August 7 through August 11 at Oak Island Park. Camps are open to ages 7 to 17 years. Campers must bring their own racket and a water bottle. Call the Park Office at 715-261-1550 to register.

The third and final Dog-Gone Pool Party of the summer will be held on Sunday, August 13, from 5:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Splash Pad in Marathon Park. The cost is $5 per adult, ages 14 and older. Ages 13 and younger are free with a paying adult. Proof of current vaccinations, in tag or paper form, is required. All dogs must have a harness or collar and aggressive dogs will be required to leave with a full refund.

There will be another opportunity to explore the view from the top of a tree as Tree Top Explorers will return to Wausau for a reserved climb on Sunday, August 20. The climb will take place at Pleasant View Park located at Tenth and Sumner Streets. Climbing times will be 10 a.m. until Noon or 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. Climbing is open to ages 7 and older with some level of fitness. Sneakers or hiking boots are required. You must be pre-registered to participate in these climbs. Registration can be made over the phone with a credit or debit card.

The first Family pajama Party and Outdoor Movie night will be held on Thursday, August 24, at the Eastbay Sports Complex located at 602 E Kent Street in Wausau. Thanks to the generous support of the Wausau Noon Optimists, EO Johnson Company and Mid-Wisconsin Beverages, the party will start at 6 p.m. with a free bounce house, limbo, human foosball and Family Twister. At sunset we will show the movie “The Secret Life of Pets.” The sound system is set up so that people can watch from their cars and listen to the movie on their car radio. Or bring blankets and chairs and watch on the grass in front of the screen. In the event of high winds or rain, the movie will be moved to the Multi-Purpose Building #2 in Marathon Park.

The Duane Corbin Shooting Range Park will be open through September on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Wednesdays from Noon until 8 p.m. On Labor Day the range will be open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. In October the range is open Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and from November 1 through November 17, the range will be open 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. daily.

The daily fee is $4 and an annual pass is $25. Some trails may be closed for logging or trail rehab. Closed trails will be posted in the main parking lot.
