The Construction and Maintenance Division maintains the city streets for the safety of all citizens and visitors of Wausau. This involves the snow plowing, snow removal and ice control on over 226 centerline miles of streets including over 18 miles of sidewalks throughout the city. The Division hosts a Spring and Fall Large Item Drop Off. The Division has a comprehensive street sweeping program during the non-winter months and performs a comprehensive city wide Fall Leaf Pick-Up service for residents. Street maintenance crews are responsible for patching, seal coating, crack sealing, and concrete repair of city street surfaces. The storm sewer crew constructs and maintains the storm sewer system including catch basin inlets, culverts, piping and ensuring inlets/sumps are cleaned for compliance with the city wide stormwater management plan. The sign shop maintains and installs all traffic information signs and pavement/traffic lines throughout the city. The Division manages a yard waste site that is free to city residents; the site takes leaves, grass and brush and is open from spring through fall leaf pick up. The Division also assists with emergencies such as storms, fires, traffic accidents and removal of debris from the roadway whenever the need arises.
