"Being on Safety Patrol is fun, but it is a serious job. I never realized how hard it is to make sure that kids get home safely." -Brennan
Because of the support of people like you, kids like Brennan have the opportunity to volunteer, learn about leadership, and keep their friends and neighbors safe by becoming safety patrols in their schools.
In Marathon County over a thousand children in public and parochial schools are invited to become safety patrols each year, and hundreds choose to actively engage in safety patrol duties. You may have seen them in your busy travels in the early hours of the morning before the other children arrive for school, or after all of the other children have already safely crossed the road to go home for the day.
These dedicated young children performing their safety duties in a variety of weather and traffic conditions, from blizzards, below zero temperatures, blowing rain, and high winds all school year. Why do they put themselves through this? Because they care about protecting the lives of their schoolmates, family members and other community members.
Safety Patrol is a volunteer position that teaches the kids valuable lessons about responsibility, dedication and commitment.
"Safety patrol is a huge responsibility. I have to be on time, act professiona lly on the job, and set a good example for the little kids. I really enjoy this job. " Amber
Children like Amber and other safety patrols ask for nothing in return for their service, but we think they deserve some incentive and reward for voluntari ly putting the safety and needs of other children first.
That is why we are asking for your help and charitable donation!
As an incentive and reward, all 600 Safety Patrollers in Marathon County are treated to a family night at the Lodge at Cedar Creek.
In addition, around 400 safety patrollers attend a special recognition program at Wausau West High School.
Select safety patrollers are also identified from each participating school by their fellow patrol members and teacher advisors. These are children who have gone above and beyond what is expected of them. Thirty (30) patrollers are selected to represent their school at the annual five-day educational tour of Washington DC. This will be our 61st year of this excellent educational opportunity, which has been approved by the participating schools.
In addition, 90 safety patrollers are selected to attend a special trip to the Wisconsin Dells or a Milwaukee Brewers baseball game.
What a great way to reach several thousand kids and reward them for setting good examples and being positive role models for their peers!
This program is funded entirely through donations. In other communities where safety patrol programs are not supported due to lack of participation and funding, it costs children their lives.
This year, gifts from people like you will be matched dollar for dollar up to $15,000 thanks to the generosity of the George & Estelle Wolff Family Fund through the Community Foundation of North Central Wisconsin.
Take advantage of this exciting and generous match opportunity to have your gift doubled!
