On June 13, 2000 the Wausau Common Council approved the creation of the River Edge Overlay District (Chapter 23.55 of the Wausau Municipal Code) and on October 10, 2000 the Common Council approved placing into a River Edge Overlay District certain Wisconsin River shoreland property extending from the ordinary high water mark of the river inland a distance of 50 feet. The purpose of the River Edge Overlay District is to help protect the water quality and scenic resources of the Wisconsin River by reducing soil bank erosion, establishing building setback regulations, and regulating signs near the river’s edge.
