* Residence within the Wausau City Limits**Family Definition:  All family members must reside at the same dwelling.  There must be at least one adult (18 yrs.+) but no more than 2 adults.  One or both adults must be the parent or legal guardian of the children.

Parents with nonswimming children are encouraged to ask pool staff for lifejackets for their children to wear while they are at the pool.How do I register for swim lessons? FREE Swim Wednesdays from 6 - 7:50 p.m. all 2 pools; no minimum age; everyone welcome!  Swim for half-price after 6pm at Kaiser and Memorial pools every evening except Wed. when its FREE after 6pm.There is no minimum age limit. Infants & toddlers who aren't toilet trained must wear swim diapers.

Swim Lessons

Registration for swim lessons begins May 1 for City of Wausau residents and for non-residents. Registration is open until classes fill. We will be offering  Pre-School Swim for ages 4 and 5 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and Parent-Child Swim (adults must accompany their child in the water) for ages 18 months to 4 years on Tuesdays and Thursdays of each session.  Lesson times and locations vary by level.  View on-line or call Park Office for details.

Parent-Child (18 mo to ages 4 yrs) Introduces basic skills to parents and children. Parents are taught to safely work with their child in the water, including how to hold, support, encourage, and evaluate their child. Children are introduced to basic skills. Class is taught Tuesdays and Thursday of each session
 
Pre-School Swim (ages 4 & 5) Introduces and builds upon basic skills including water entry/exit, breath control, supported floating on front and back, glides, alternate arms and legs movement on front and back, life jacket use and safety around water. Class is taught Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays of each session.
 
Small-fry, (Beginner Swimmer) Child must be at least 5 years of age to take this class. No prior swimming experience is necessary.
 
Gold Fish, (Advanced Beginner Swimmer) Child must be able to demonstrate the following skills on the first day of class: Safe entry from the side or stairs, blow bubbles, front and back float with support, alternating arm and leg motion with support and roll from front to back and back to front with support. Recover to standing from front or back float with support.
 
Bluegill, (Intermediate Swimmer) Child must have passed Gold Fish. Class covers stroke development, water safety, and seated and kneeling head-first water entry.
 
Porpoise, (Advanced Swimmer) Student must have passed Small-Fry, Gold Fish, and Bluegill to participate. Class covers deep water bobbing, and advanced water safety.
 
 

Renting a Pool for Private Parties

Kaiser and Memorial Pool Private Rental Rates:Kaiser and Memorial pools are both available to rent for private parties from June 13 - Aug. 20, 2016 on Saturday and Sunday mornings 9am to Noon.  Memorial pool is also available to rent in the evenings from 8pm-11pm.  Reservations must be made at the Park Office, 212 River Drive, Suite #2. You must be 18 years of age, to rent the pool.

January, 2017 Lifeguard Training Classes:

Beat next springs rush....
Youth and adults, ages 15 and older, who are interested in becoming certified as American Red Cross Lifeguards, may register for a lifeguard class offered at John Muir Middle School (Enter Door #23 across from Marathon Park Campground).  The class will be held on January 3, 5, 6, and 7, 2017.  January 3, 5, and 6 from 5pm to 9pm; January 7 (Saturday) 8am to 4pm. Participants can register at the Park Office located at 212 River Drive, Suite #2, Wausau, or print off a registration form and complete, sign, date, scan and e-mail it back to the park office and call with a credit card to pay.

Eligibility: Participants must be at least 15 years of age, able to swim 300 yards, tread water, and complete a timed retrieval of a ten-pound weight from deep water. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be certified in American Red Cross Liefeguarding, First Aid, CPR and AED.

The fee for the class is $165 for first time lifeguards (including books and pocket masks) and $65 for renewing lifeguards, must provide own book and pocket mask.

Phone 715 261-1550 for more details.  Cash, check, or credit card payments are accepted.  Make checks payable to "Park Department".  To sign up, complete a registration form and fax, e-mail, or drop off your registration and payment to the Park Administrative Office, 212 River Drive, Suite #2, Wausau.  If you fax or e-mail your signed registration form you can call in to pay by credit card so you wouldn't have to U.S. Mail or drive to our office to get registered.

*Younger students with strong swimming skills may be accepted into the Varsity Squad.
** Job shadowing experiences can be scheduled at Memorial or Kaiser Pools or at the Weston Aquatic Center and can be followed by free swim.

Description
The first day all students will show up at 10:10am.  Students will be evaluated for their swimming skills and placed in Varsity or Junior Varsity squads. Thereafer, the JV Squad will meet at 10:10am and the Varsity Squad will meet at 11:05am.  Both levels will receive training in/and introductions to CPR, First Aid, AED, Swimmer Surveillance, Reaching Rescues (non-contact), Emergency Water Entry, and Emergency Action Plans. They will also improve their stroke techniques and swimming endurance.

Rewards
As skills are mastered, students will earn incentives including aquatic themed prizes, food coupons, swim passes and more. After the three week class, students will have an additional 10 days to schedule 3 to 5, 45 minute job shadowing experiences, exploring lifeguard scanning, rotations, in-service training, and spinal injury management. Students that complete the training and minimum shadowing experiences will earn access to a private pool party to celebrate their efforts.
