The Wausau Fire Department has 61 members and all are trained to perform multiple tasks. A typical member is trained to perform duties of:

  • a Fire Fighter
  • an Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic, or Critical Care Paramedic
  • a Hazardous Materials Response Technician
  • an Emergency Vehicle Operator
  • a Technical Rescuer
  • and Fire Inspector.

It is the Mission of the Wausau Fire Department to provide rapid, professional emergency services to protect and enhance our community.

We do this by:

Operating 3 fire stations which are strategically located throughout the City:

  • Utilizing many pieces of apparatus that include: 4 pumpers, 2 aerial ladders, 5 ambulances, 6 automobiles/vans, 1 heavy rescue vehicle, 1 hazardous materials incident command tow vehicle, 1 hazardous materials equipment trailer, 1 all-terrain vehicles, 1 brush truck, 1 public fire education tractor/trailer, and 3 rescue boats.
  • Providing fire protection to our communities serving 39,106 people within an area of 19.8 square miles.
  • Providing emergency medical services (EMS) to 6 communities serving 45,164 people in an area of 186.10 square miles.
