EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES

The City of Wausau Fire Department has been providing emergency medical services (E.M.S.) to the City of Wausau and surrounding communities since 1972, With Wausau holding the first EMT class in the state. Wausau Fire paramedics are cross-trained as firefighters also. We take tremendous pride in providing high quality emergency medical care to our citizens.

The Wausau Fire Department is a Licensed EMS provider within the state of Wisconsin. All of our ambulances are licensed to the Critical Care Paramedic level which is the highest level for ground transport units in the state. We maintain staffed ambulances with two firefighter/paramedics within each fire company. Each ambulance carries advanced life support drugs, a cardiac monitor defibrillator, LUCAS device for compressions, video laryngoscopes, and other advanced EMS equipment to provide the highest level of care when firefighters arrive at the patient's side.

EMS is the highest demand on our service and requires all operations personnel working as a team to provide seamless coverage around the clock for our citizens and visitors. We are proud to maintain an average response time of less than 5 minutes throughout our community. All of the cities three fire stations are also equipped with ALS fire engines.  Engine companies are utilized to assist on EMS calls of a serious nature such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, strokes, head injuries, drowning, and serious trauma. Many times the department’s three ambulances are tied up on medical emergencies, the departments three ALS engine companies will first respond to provide immediate medical care. This tactic greatly reduces the time of having trained medical personal respond to your emergency.

We respond to around 4,500 EMS incidents per year with that number only growing larger and larger. We typically transport patients to hospitals within the Wausau Metro area including Aspirus Wausau Hospital (an ACS Accredited Level 2 Trauma Center), and St. Clare’s Ministry Hospital. Selection is based on patient preference or appropriate facility based on the patient's condition.
