Weed Complaints

Property owners are responsible for maintaining and mowing their properties. All noxious weeds must be destroyed and grass, weeds and brush shall not exceed one foot in height. Complaints about high weeds/grass should be directed to the Inspections Deparatment at 715-261-6780.

Defective Sidewalk

The Engineering Department has an ongoing program to replace defective sidewalk throughout the City. During routine inspections of neighborhoods we find that some sidewalk may be damaged, cracked, sunken or deteriorated, or the sidewalk may be raised by boulevard tree roots. Defective sidewalks present a serious safety hazard to pedestrians and we try to remove and replace such sidewalk on a timely basis. Any locations of defective sidewalk which presents a safety hazard can be reported to the Engineering Department at 715-261-6740.

Property owners may pay a special assessment for the replacement of defective sidewalk. Property owners are currently assessed 25% of the cost of replacement. However, if the sidewalk is damaged due to boulevard tree roots, or is on the long side of a corner lot, there is no assessment to the property owner. There is no assessment to corner lots for the replacement of public corners.

Snow/Ice Covered Sidewalk

It is the responsibility of property owners to keep the public sidewalk adjacent to their property clear of ice and snow. Sidewalks should be cleared within 24 hours of a snowfall. Property owners are also responsible for snow removal from public corners which may abut their property. Sidewalk which has not been cleared of snow and ice creates a great deal of inconvenience to persons using the sidewalk and presents a safety hazard and possible exposure to liability. Reports of snow/ice covered sidewalks should be directed to the Engineering Department at 715-261-6740. The sidewalk will be inspected and if necessary a notice will be sent to the property owner to clear the sidewalk within 48 hours. If the sidewalk is not cleared, City crews will accomplish the work and the property owner will be charged for the cost. The minimum charge per lot is approximately $90.

Snow Removal from Downtown Sidewalks/Parking Lots/Parking Ramps/Other

The City of Wausau removes snow/ice from downtown sidewalks, parking lots and parking ramps as soon as possible following, and sometimes during, snowfalls. If you encounter a problem with unsafe conditions 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, please call the Department of Public Works at 715-261-6960. After 4:30 p.m. and on weekends or holidays, please call the non-emergency phone number for Marathon County Dispatch at 715-261-7795. (The same numbers should be called if there are problems with other sidewalks which are regularly maintained by the City; Grand Avenue, for example.)
