Dogs on leashes are allowed in all city parks and the Marathon Park Horse Exercise Area is available for off-leash activities. Annually, the Parks Department hosts, Dog Gone Pool Parties at the Marathon Park Splash Pad. The 2009 events are 5:30 to 8pm on Sunday June 28, Monday August 3 and Sunday August 23. The admission is $3 for an adult and youth ages 12 and under are free with a paid adult. Owners must provide proof of current rabies and distemper shots for their pets.

How many pets may I have in the City of Wausau?
The city municipal code limits ownership to no more than two dogs and/or three cats over the age of five months in or upon one residential unit unless the premise is a licensed kennel.
Are there any other critter restrictions in the City?
The city municipal code limits ownership to no more than three domestic animals which includes rabbits, gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs, rats or other similar pets in any one residence.
Are any animals forbidden within the City?
Raising or owning bees, wasps, hornets, poisonous snakes, farm animals, wolves or any animal raised for fur-bearing purposes are not allowed.
Do my pets need to be licensed?
Yes, the City of Wausau requires dogs and cats older than 5 months be licensed. Proof of rabies vaccination is required at the time of licensing. The license can be obtained in person at the Customer Service Counter at City Hall, or you can download the license application form and mail it in, along with your rabies certificate and payment to Customer Service 407 Grant Street, Wausau WI 54403. The rabies certificate will be returned to you with your license. Licensing fees are as follows:
Neutered male dog or cat $5
Unneutered male dog or cat $15
Spayed female dog or cat $5
Unspayed female dog or cat $15
A late fee of $5 is imposed if the license is obtained after April 1.
