How many pets may I have in the City of Wausau?
The city municipal code limits ownership to no more than two dogs and/or three cats over the age of four months in or upon one residential unit, unless you hold and are approved for a Pet Fancier permit. To apply for Pet Fancier permit, click here.
Are there any other critter restrictions in the City?
The city municipal code limits ownership to no more than three domestic animals which includes rabbits, gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs, rats or other similar pets in any one residence.
Are any animals forbidden within the City?
Raising or owning bees, wasps, hornets, poisonous snakes, farm animals, wolves or any animal raised for fur-bearing purposes are not allowed.
Do my pets need to be licensed?
Yes, the City of Wausau requires dogs and cats older than 4 months be licensed. Proof of rabies vaccination is required at the time of licensing. The license can be obtained in a variety of ways:

Unneutered male dog or cat $20

A late fee of double the regular license fee in addition to the required license fee is imposed if the license is obtained after March 31.

Are dogs allowed in City Parks?
Yes dogs on leashes are permitted in City Parks. In addition off-leash park times are:
Oak Island Park 6am to 9am and 6pm to 9pm
Picnic Island Park 6am to 9am and 6pm to 9pm
Memorial Park 6am to 9am
Pets are not allowed in the 400 Block during special events.
