How many pets may I have in the City of Wausau?

The city municipal code limits ownership to no more than two dogs and/or three cats over the age of four months in or upon one residential unit. 

Are there any other critter restrictions in the City?

The city municipal code limits ownership to no more than three domestic animals which includes rabbits, gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs, rats or other similar pets in any one residence.

Are any animals forbidden within the City?

Raising or owning bees, wasps, hornets, poisonous snakes, farm animals, wolves or any animal raised for fur-bearing purposes are not allowed.

Do my pets need to be licensed?

Yes, the City of Wausau requires dogs and cats older than 4 months be licensed.  Proof of rabies vaccination is required at the time of licensing.  The license can be obtained in a variety of ways:  

  • In person at the Customer Service Counter at City Hall 407 Grant St. Wausau, WI 54403.
  • You can download the license application form and mail it in, along with your rabies certificate and payment to Customer Service 407 Grant Street, Wausau WI 54403.  
  • You can visit PetData online at www.PetData.com.
  • You can mail the application and payment to Wausau & Weston Animal Licensing c/o PetData, P.O. Box 141929, Irving TX 75014-1929

Licensing fees are as follows:

Neutered male dog or cat $10

Unneutered male dog or cat $20

Spayed female dog or cat $10

Unspayed female dog or cat $20

A late fee of double the regular license fee in addition to the required license fee is imposed if the license is obtained after March 31.

What are some ways to be a responsible pet owner?

The biggest complaints received by the police department regarding pets include animals running unattended, excessive barking and dogs doing their 'business' on other lawns.  The complete city regulation on animals is found in Chapter 8 of the City of Wausau Municipal Code.
